JAB2021: Natječaj za rezidencijalni program // Open call for residency program

Jelsa Art Bijenala 2021: Saturn u Opoziciji

Jelsa Art Biennial 2021: Saturn at Opposition

1.7. – 2.8.2021.

Residency for young artists

LAB852 is announcing an open call for participation in a residency program in the framework of the Jelsa Art Biennial 2021: Saturn at Opposition, organized in co-production with associations Sustainable Island (Jelsa/HR), Improvise & Organize (Agueda, PT), the Moon Gallery (Amsterdam/NL) and Magic Carpets projects.

Jelsa Art Biennial is a festival of contemporary art that connects different audiences through a variety of artistic media and practices that are based on an artistic reflection on the specifics of the territory and its related socio-cultural topic. The event is specific because most of the works are performed in public space with the aim of bringing contemporary art closer to wide audiences and showing its soft power to stimulate discussion on topics that are not sufficiently articulated in public discourse. The 2021 edition, Saturn at Opposition will be considering different aspects of the sixth planet of Solar system and its metaphorical dimensions, reflecting on time as an essential, building dimension of our existence, the bearer of the undeniable property to destroy as much as it creates. In accordance with this principle, the main locations of research and presentation of the Jelsa Art Biennial were selected: on the one hand, abandoned and decrepit objects that are unstoppably devoured by nature, on the other locations in nature where life flourishes and is renewed, and which is unstoppably devoured by man.

THE RESIDENCY

Art residencies are expected to produce new collaborative works under the guidance of mentors and presentations at biennial locations. Ideas elaborated through collaboration and collaboration will be included in the selection to be sent to the moon as part of the Moon Gallery project.

As part of the art residency, the artists will, with the support of mentors of different disciplines, realize the production of new collaborative works and presentations at the locations of the biennial. The residency program will take place in 2 cycles: from 1 to 10.7. and from 19 to 30.7. The ideas elaborated through the first cycle will be included in a selection of works to send to the Moon as part of the Moon Gallery project, while the second cycle, aimed at video artists, will focus on creating a “time capsule” of different parallel narratives, in collaboration with the artist Gemma Riggs.

PROFILE OF THE ARTISTS WE ARE LOOKING FOR

As part of the call, we are looking for artists who are suitable for collaborative work in an environment outside the studio, since the locations of the entire biennial are determined by the characteristics of work in public space and work on the sites of abandoned buildings.

The call is open to artists from the fields of: video, sound, literature / poetry, architecture, sculpture, land art, sound, and practices operating at the intersection of science and art.

1.7.-11.7. – Moon Gallery / Space Habitat Residency

“Space Habitat Residency” is organised in partnership with the Moon Gallery Foundation – the cultural platform that enables interdisciplinary and international cooperation and knowledge exchange between creative/artistic sectors on the one hand and space/technology sectors on the other. Moon Gallery develops the first permanent extraterrestrial art gallery, in the form of an installation of 100 works by international artists, set to land on the moon as early as 2025. Getting to the Moon is hard. Each kilo of mass massively increases the complexity and cost of getting there. For this reason, a narrow artistic constraint is imposed: each Moon Gallery artifact fits within just one cubic centimeter. 100 artworks will be integrated into a 10 by 10 grid tray. These micro, highly concentrated ideas will contribute to the establishment of the first lunar outpost.  In the framework of the residency we invite emerging artists from the fields of, art-science, sound, architecture and creative writing to think about what art and culture means to us at the beginning of the multiplanetary epoch of humanity. Imagine looking at the Earth from some distance, from different space and time that the Moon can offer us. During the residency artists are invited to become a crew of an analogue space base and immerse themselves in research and exploration while observing the most beautiful planet. The artists of the “Space Habitat Residency” are expected to work in close collaboration with each other, reflecting on each other’s ideas and working towards individual as well as collective presentation.

19.7.-30.7. Gemma Riggs/Time capsules
Complementing the activities developed at the Moon Gallery residence in preparation of works of art to be sent to the Moon, the second part of the residency led by British artist Gemma Riggs will focus on video, off-center documentation and creating a kind of “time capsule” of art processes at JAB 2021. The developed documentary and artistic approach will develop a nonlinear and rhizomatic approach and provide insights through fragments and unresolved side narratives relating to the meaning, subjectivity and concept that make up the whole. Such an approach, in contrast to typical documentation that seeks to create neat stories and provide resolved narratives for audiences, aims to provide a more intricate and authentic insight into JAB’s artistic activities, in a democratic and collaborative way.
