Jelsa Art Biennial: Saturn at Opposition

01.07. – 02.08.2021

The starting point of the research that will be conducted during the preparations and implementation of the biennial is inspired by the natural phenomenon of Saturn at Opposition. The opposition is an astronomical phenomenon that will appear in the night sky during the summer of 2021, and in the astronomical dictionary, it denotes the relationship of a planetary object to other bodies of the solar system and the Sun itself at a given time. Observing the mythological incarnation of the sixth planet of the solar system, after whom it was named, the Roman god Saturn is the embodiment of the contradiction of his appearance as an agricultural fruit-bearer who brought mankind tools for cultivating the earth and the god of time and decay the attribute taken from his Greek counterpart Chronos, a Titan who mutilates his father in order to take power, in return to experience the same fate at the hands of his son to give power to the next generation. During Saturnalia, agricultural festivals dedicated to Saturn, social relations would be reversed, servants commanded masters, and masters served their slaves at the table, a process that in part evokes the inevitable processes of generational change [1].

The British astrophysicist Arthur Eddington noted in 1923 that time moves only in one direction, forward: the past lies behind us, it is fixed and unchangeable, and it is accessible by memory or written documentation; on the other hand, the future is before us and is not necessarily fixed, and, although we may be able to predict it to some extent, there is no indisputable proof of this [2]. Nevertheless, the psychological understanding of the direction and dynamics of the passage of time is much more complex and indeterminate than its physical features. In the book Why Life Accelerates As We Get Older, Douwe Draaisma discusses the semblance of the rapid passage of time due to aging and explains the phenomenon by routinization of habits and lack of novelty in everyday life while explaining the slow passage of time in childhood by continuous exposure to new information and experiences. In the text written for the occasion of the recent departure of Tonko Maroević, while describing Maroević’s slow Mediterranean walk, Đorđe Matić [3] paraphrases Kundera’s famous passage from the novel Slowness: “Two walk down the street: one who wants to remember something will stop or slow down, and one who wants to escape a memory, especially a bad one, speeds up.”

Looking back at the aspect of time as the essential, constructive dimensions of our existence, we understand that time has the undeniable property to destroy as much as it creates. In accordance with this principle, the main locations for research and presentation in the biennial were selected: on the one hand, abandoned and decrepit objects that are unstoppably devoured by nature, on the other locations in nature where life flourishes and is renewed, and which is unstoppably devoured by man. In the biennial program from June to August 2021, supported by Saturn’s oppositions with Venus, Mars, and the Sun, we will present the reflections of local and international artists whose artistic practices problematize individual and global relations to different iterations of Time, as well as those referring to it in all its metaphorical meanings. In 2021, the Jelsa Art Biennial wants to address the burning issues of our everyday life: the apparent acceleration of time as opposed to its slowing down, the processes of decay opposed to the processes of construction, transience and mortality, intergenerational relations, and the eternal scattering of matter and time into entropy in contrast with the impossibility of disintegration in the midst of the ecological crisis that marks the age in which we live.
