Magic Carpets: Study visit of Francisca Rocha Gonçalves to Jelsa

5. – 12.07.2020.
In the heat of the beginning of July, we hosted a Magic Carpets study visit of a Portuguese artist Francisca Rocha Gonçalves, known as Kika (Ideias Emergentes).

During her stay in Jelsa Kika dedicated her time to connect with the place, through sounds and rhythms of Jelsa and its surroundings, to the sea and the worlds it hides. Since her residency, which will be taking place in August this year, is oriented towards mapping and understanding the soundscapes of the Jelsa’s underworlds well as exploring the value of acoustic ecology and sharing the knowledge through a series of workshops, Kika set out to discover boat routes and marked places in the sea set and used by local fisherman through observation, knowledge sharing with locals and visits to local Fisherman’s museum, all while testing and recording underwater soundscapes on different spots in order to try to understand Jelsa.

In the framework of the study visit, the testing workshop #UGASIISLUŠAJ #SWITHCOFFANDLISTEN was realized near the little island of Zečevo, belonging to Jelsa’s archipelago, where Kika was joined by local friends and listening enthusiasts in a workshop aimed at explaining underwater sounds and listening practices, artificially making noise to reveal noise pollution impact in aquatic environments. During this experience, we were joined by the filmmaking crew (filming Darko Škrobonja / postproduction Toni Mijač), which recorded the materials for the #swithcoffandlisten campaign’s promo video.

Kika will return for her residency at the beginning of August so we invite you to stay tuned to the sounds of the seabed coming from Jelsa and follow the development in the following weeks.
