donaufestival 2018 ENDLESS NOW
April 27 - 29 & May 04 – 06
donaufestival 2018 investigates the fractures in the operating system of the endless now and the potential of accelerations and decelerations, exaggerations and rejections. And in the placeless world of networking it searches for something old-fashioned: presence, moments of intimacy, offline rituals, and the headstrong yet longstanding mediatised experience of time in music and art.
For instance, there is the Church of Ignorance by Liquid Loft. In this liturgy in the mighty Dominican Church of Krems fascinating flip-images emerge between a choreographed linguistic jumble of the last robust dialects of Europe and an Esperanto of body language. Or the theatre adaptation The Re´Search by Felix Rothenhäusler, which correlates with the exhibition by Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch in Kunsthalle Krems, in which overwrought self-promoters jabber the Occident to death with their influencer gibberish. Or the fitness training camp Medusa Bionic Rise where the young troupe The Agency celebrates prototypes of yet another cutting-edge model of new humans. Or the outdoor crusade Trophée by Rudi van der Merwe in which a Baroque formation marches towards the audience on the green of Grafenegg Castle.
In the disturbing image sequences of John Gerrard the present manifests as a real-time simulation, while the music line-up at donaufestival delves into the simultaneity of the non-simultaneous. Highly compressed and jagged soundscapes by artists like Laurel Halo, Lanark Artefax, Mouse on Mars, Pan Daijing, Amnesia Scanner, Orson Hentschel, or Lotic collide with the enraptured compositions of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, James Holden & The Animal Spirits, Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois, Nadah El Shazly, Manuel Göttsching, Grouper, or Sote. A hovering melancholy suffering mildly from retrofuturism in the music of Jakuzi, Circuit des Yeux, or Molly Nilsson is juxtaposed with the dense, energetic severity of Gravetemple, Lightning Bolt, EX EYE, and Big|Brave and the demonic visitations by Puce Mary or Demdike Stare.
